Testing a trading strategy against historical price data to find out whether it has an edge, before you risk money on it. In practice that means replaying a past session bar by bar, taking the trades your rules would have taken, and reading the result honestly.

Does Traders Journal replay bar by bar, or run a strategy automatically?

Bar by bar. You step the chart forward and place the trades yourself, which is the mode that tests your execution as well as your rules. We do not currently run an automated strategy engine that takes trades for you from a written description.

Which markets can I backtest?

27 instruments across 5 groups — indian indices (3), index futures (6), metals and energy (3), forex (9), crypto (6). Timeframes run 1m through 1M.

Can I backtest NIFTY and BANKNIFTY?

Yes, and this is the part most backtesting tools cannot do at all. Both replay on real NSE session hours and NSE holidays rather than on a generic 24-hour clock, so the open, the close and the gaps land where they actually landed.

Yes, and not as a trial. Free gives you 10 a day replay sessions with unlimited trades inside each one, every asset class, multi-year history, and custom scripted indicators. Premium removes the session cap — unlimited — raises the indicators per chart and unlocks the full metric suite.

Do you have ICT and smart-money indicators?

Built in, not as add-ons: fair value gaps tracked until they fill, session overlays, 90-minute cycles, three-bar swing points, CPR and pivot levels, supply and demand zones, and break-of-structure waves. You can also write your own indicator and run it on the replay.

Do backtest trades mix with my live trades?

They live in the same product but stay identifiable, so you can read them together or apart. That is the point: comparing what the strategy did in replay against what you did live is where the gap between a plan and its execution shows up.

How accurate is the data?

Replay is driven by stored one-minute candles, aggregated up to whichever timeframe you are viewing. That is honest for testing setups and structure. It is not tick-by-tick, so it will not settle arguments about fills inside a single minute.
